Dame Chi Onwurah visits Westgate Hill for Black History Month

Pupils at Westgate Hill Primary Academy welcomed a special visitor as Dame Chi Onwurah DBE, MP for Newcastle Central and West, met with Key Stage 1 children to mark Black History Month 2026.

During the visit, Chi shared her personal story with pupils and discussed this year's Black History month theme, which encourages people to recognise the individuals who shape, support and strengthen communities across Britain.

The session gave pupils an opportunity to hear about Chi's experiences, learn about the contributions people make to their communities and reflect on the importance of recognising different stories and perspectives.

Black History Month provides an opportunity for schools to celebrate Black history, recognise achievements and help children develop an understanding of the people and experiences that have shaped British society.

Westgate Hill would like to thank Chi for taking the time to visit and speak with pupils. The children were delighted to welcome their local MP and take part in such a valuable discussion.
